ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani assured the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) of military's full cooperation in carrying out voters' verification in Karachi, following the Supreme Court judgment.
In an informal talk with media persons, Chairman Nadra Tariq Malik said that the process of verification will start from January 5 and would be completed within a month.
Following the meeting of General Kayani at Nadra HQ, Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G Ebrahim told media persons that the COAS pledged his full support for holding free and fair elections. "The army chief assured his full cooperation to the commission regarding the general elections," he maintained.
He said that the commission freely and clearly discussed the matter with General Kayani and confidence of ECP strengthened further that elections would be held in a free and fair manner.
Brushing asides speculations regarding the possibility of any delay in holding election, the CEC termed such speculations rubbish and said that the ECP would meet again on January 2 to discuss the issue of delimitation of constituencies in Karachi.
However, he said, he was personally not in favour of new delimitations before census. However, the decision would be taken in consultation with political parties.
General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani visited Nadra headquarter along with the Director-General of Military Operations and was briefed on the electronic registration process.
He visited different sections of the building and got a special briefing about the data bank. He remained there for over an hour and exchanged views with Nadra staff. He also applied for a smart ID card.
